After watching shows like "The Ultimate Fighter" and dealing with many of the so called "MMA fighters" that come by the club, it just reinforces to me that MMA fosters an attitude that is contradictory to what we try and foster in the traditional arts.

I see so much ego and arrogance projected through aggression and violence. (Always ready to fight and be violent, to use language as a tool to foster such) At least when the same is shown in the TMA it is shown through elitism. Though Elitism is also a trait I see much in the MMA people I meet, when they deal with TMAs.

It has become clear that MMA fosters the gladiatorial, alpha-competitive attitude over a warrior mindset. Though there is a MMA guy or two that I know that exude the persona we try to impart in the TMAs.

I know that it is due to the type of person each activity tends to attract. But to the layman who does not distinguish between the arts (Society as a whole), it is still a black eye in the face of the martial arts as a whole.

And yes as with most statements in life this is a generalization, as there are exceptions to smaller degrees within every observation.

I agree with Wael.

If someone comes to my Dojang and says "I want to learn how to fight!". I keep asking them why?

Why do you want to learn how to fight? "Because I want to kick arse!"

Why do you want to kick arse? "Because I'll show people I'm tough!".

Why do you want to look tough? it goes on. Out of 10 people that have entered my Dojang like that 2 have never come back, the rest got the message. Hapkido is about learning how NOT to fight, because you don't want to hurt people - only protect yourself, your family and your friends.

This doesn't mean that they can't show good sportsmanship.

The MMA guy's goal is to fight, and to inflict as much punishment as he can. Whereas the TMA practitioner's goal is not to fight, and if he must then not to inflict any more punishment than necessary.

Totally different mindset, different personalities, different goals, and attracting different kinds of people as you said.
