I am trying to learn one of our higher ranking forms from a tape my Sabumnim gave me. It's above my belt level and he wants me to be able to teach it. He is showing me a few steps at a time. I can't seem to follow the tape , I can't seem to work in the reverse. It's fine if I already know the steps but learning a new sequence seems hard. What is your opinion regarding learning forms from tapes? SteelyJan

Leraning from tapes is difficult unless you already have a basic understanding of what is going on. Even for advanced work it can be challenging, but still possible. You have the ground work down. You have an understanding of the art. I would say that you don't have to concern yourself with the most difficult part.

So don't try and watch the video as a whole. But instead watch it like this. First observe the foot work over and over until you got it down, then work your way up until you have it all. Simplify it and you will be fine.
