Hapkido in America

Why do you believe that martial arts training is not taken as a serious form of study in the U.S. And in other places outside of Asia?

Kevin Sogor replied to Daniel McCullar's discussion How far would you drive for good instruction?
"True, but if we don't give them information and a place to learn, we can never hope to change that."

"But chances are that the beginner is not going to know the difference between food and bad instruction, let alone mediocre."

Primary martial arts style:
Jung Bai Hap Ki Do
How many years practiced?
since 1980
Other arts you've trained in:
Base art is Hapkido, also trained in 2 other styles of Hapkido, American style boxing, American style wrestling, Kajukenbo, Judo, Bjj, different styles of Gung Fu, Okinowan Shorin Ryu, TKD, Wing Chun, Muai Thai, military combatives from back in my service days.... I do believe that is about it..
What do you love about your art?
I am a traditionalist, I love the fact that I can maintain a traditional attitude and mindset and still have an art that is progressive and eclectic in technique and application. I also love how everything else (99% at least) works so well with my chosen base art.
Where do you study or practice?
Our Headquarters is located in Korea, but for the time being there is a beautiful park that is local where I train and teach as well a small yoge/pilates studio, 1 day a week..

It is the principle that is to be mastered, not just the mere mechanical motions, before one can develop an effective system of self-defense.

I am Irish/Native American(Chocktaw, Blackfoot & Tsalagi) with a pinch of Austrian thrown in there over 100 years or so ago. I spent 10 years in the military and 3 in law enforcement(1 special police, 2 fugitive recovery). I am now in Cali making a go of it as an actor, stunts (primarily martial arts/fight stunts & choreograghy(stage combat). Things are going pretty good. I have met a lot of people: actors, models, producers, stunt people & 10 times that in FLAKES. Even so it is slow going, but positive energy flows. My over all goals are simple. I want to be able to afford my own studio without worrying about cost, and to be able to share with the world my passion that is Hap Ki Do, the beauty of the Korean people and their culture. There is so much out there about every other Asian culture, but so little that honestly represents the Korean culture.

While working a club on a Punk Rock night, and greviousley under staffed security wise a fight broke out on ghetto smoking patio. I get down there to see a dozen or so dudes beating up a guy. Went in with another guard to help the guy. Pulled a guy out and he slipped off a 12" ledge and went to the ground. I had to fend off what I later found out was 5 guys. The guy on the ground was getting hit, kicked and stomped so I went to cover him. The second I went to the ground at the guys side, some… Continue

2012 preparation plans

People ask me what plans have I made in preparation for the coming apocalypse (not really).

Have I stored ammo, weapons, food or water? Do I have a base of operations or shelter to go to?

I tell them, I am a combat martial artist, soldier and warrior. I have been preparing my entire life. Anything I pick up is a weapon. Guns and ammo will be there for the taking if needed. And during the first few weeks, survival will be based upon ones ability to fight and adapt. That…

Comeback for being called racist

A fight happened tonight at one of the clubs I work at. At the end when we were kicking out everyone involved a drunk black guy looked at me and asked why I was being racist (even though I kick EVERYONE involved out!) My response, that I have been waiting quite a while to use:

Why are you racist! You are a racist!

Sir, I don't follow Nascar!

Getting hit

Sometimes getting hit and getting a shiner is a good thing.

It reminds us that no matter how good we may actually be, we are not invincible.

It reminds us that even those of us with all the experience and training in the world can always use more.

It reminds our egos to stay in check. For all ego is, is our minds saying that we still have something to prove.

Plus they make for a heck of an interesting story!

sparring under the influence

Was light sparring with a wing chun friend. He hasn't trained in about 2 years, so hospital control is off. It was a center line sparring and no guarding. Striking was supposed to be with open hands. Oops! Now Dan has a nice shiner and my bud feels like poop!

I kept trying to tell him not to sweat it. Everyone gets hit, especially if you are not guarding and the other guy is a few years outa practice. He thinks he defaced me. I tell him hell no. It is how things are for a…

Hi Daniel, in answer to your question, I posted two photos (couldn't load it onto this thread) about a series I had started called Warrior Women With Weapons or WWWW... sold the few pieces I had made.... I've been thinking about re-inventing them!

I will definitely relay your message to Grand Master Song. I'm sure he will appreciate it.

I am only a yellow belt at the moment, but if you are serious about training sometime, I may need somebody to practice my self-defense techniques on.

I wish, I bought a domain name awhile back through godaddy but was so computer illiterate I got frustated and stuck so I gave up. I would give anything for a good website but I can't do it myself.

I know how you feel - the more I talk about Hapkido the better I feel about how much I have learnt. Also the more confident I feel about opening up my own DoJang next year.

Glad you liked my comment. I knew you would reply.

Every gym is different, I guess. My jujitsu/kenpo classes are now taught out of a local gym and they have not given us a dedicated space to train, or treated us very well in general. On the other hand, a popular local martial arts school moved into a gym called T-Sport, and they gave them four or five dedicated spaces with permanent mats and integrated the curriculum into the gym schedule very well.
