There are of course differences between "styles" of Hapkido (pretty sure I've seen that argument somewhere around here before), and differences from school to school, and instructor to instructor. But at your schools, what weapons are taught at what level? Is it set in stone? Or does it depend more on the student?
I ask because I am interested in learning cane. I think they look really fun. However, they aren't taught until second dan in KSW (still some years away).
In KSW weapons are not required to achieve colored belt rankings. But if one wishes to learn them most teachers teach them at these levels. Though by no means do all teachers know or teach all the weapons.
Jool Bong (Nunchaku) are taught at white, yellow, or above.
Jung Bong (Standard staff) - yellow or blue belt.
Gum (curved blade, Korean slicing sword) at first dan.
Jung Gum (strait blade, Korean piercing sword) at first dan [though far less common then standard Gum).
Rope - second dan.
Short Staff - Not sure, but seen quite a few short staff demonstrations, definitely second or higher.
Cane - second or third dan.
Bu Chae (Fan) third dan.
Spear - Not sure, at least third or higher.
Halbred - fifth dan or so.
Knives (both fighting and throwing) not sure on when techniques are taught but there are often throwing competitions at tournaments (seen some scarily good underbelts).
Korean Bow and Arrow - Taught by only a few schools around the world, no idea the level.
Battle Axe - Not sure.
Long staff - Not sure
Dan Gum (straight bladed short sword) not sure.
Segmented Staff - Never actually seen anyone ever use one, just seen them on the wall as decor.
there are about a dozen more that I'm missing, but my mind is coming up blank at the moment.

Permalink Reply by Daniel McCullar on January 9, 2012 at 4:52pm My Gm typically teaches these weapons.
Jo and Bo staff, sword, tom bo, knife and gun defense, knife throwing and fighting, cane and rope.
Basic staves, tom bo and beginning sword at higher gup ranks. (though I have started teaching sword much sooner)
Knife and gun defenses at brown
begin at 1st dan:
Cane basics
Knife throwing a fighting
cane basics
Second Dan:
more of the same, progression of all prior weapons.
Third Dan:
Rope techniques basics
4th and 5th dan is finishing up weapons and we are required to always polish.
My Gm also does nunchucks, fan and a few other chinese weapons. Not part of the official curriculum but he will teach them at higher dan ranks for those who wish to learn.
I myself also teach the Tomahawk and basics of stick fighting. when I get my own dojang going I will bring in professional instructors for Shinkendo, Kali/Arnis and a few other arts. This is until I am certified to teach them myself. They will be extra weapons for students to learn if the choose.
