"Hello all, Any update on "J"? And another perspective:  Every technique in Hapkido can be done almost effortlessly against a fully resistant opponent, and the pressure of "locking" can be moderated as needed - even though…"

"Hello All, I think that the students take it virtually the same from what I have seen.  Some are very involved, others train as a hobby, both of which are fine.  The difference to me is the instructors.  Korean instructors in Korea…"

John Wilkerson replied to Daniel McCullar's discussion Hapkido in America
"Martial arts are taken as seriously in the US as in Asia. The difference is in perception. We are all of different cultures and how we appear to others and ourselves is always debatable.   We in the US place our children in the arts. This…"

"She could always go with you if she really wanted. Talk during the drive, and then she could read a book or whatever while you train."

Hapkido in America

Why do you believe that martial arts training is not taken as a serious form of study in the U.S. And in other places outside of Asia?

Worn Out

I teach Hapkido and Silat informally, and I love both arts with a passion, but in both arts I have a few years of formal instruction followed by many years of self-guided exploration. No meaningful rank in either art. I would like to open a proper Hapkido school in the future, but I don't see it happening…

Tested!!

Had a great Hapkido weekend, tested for 2nd dan on Friday, around 3 hours of sweat and pain!  then a seminar all day Saturday, followed by taking our GM to the beach for a BBQ and some surfing on Sunday!!  There was 5 of us testing, 3 for 1st dan and 2 of us for 2nd.  On Thursday night we videoed all the gup rank material with our GM to assist in our training, now we are going to have fun reviewing everything to insure we are executing properly!

All it took was 2 solid hours working it with a great teacher, who is asking nothing for the time she is spending with me, just pass the test. BUSHIDO! Three of us meet on Fridays and work on specific techniques or forms. This has helped a lot. Don't get me wrong , some days I feel totally inadequate. I will do my…

Training Like Crazy, Feel Like I'm Regressing?

Hi Wael and fellow Hapkidoists!

So I am preparing for my Black Belt on May 13th and I am training almost everyday, watching videos of our techniques, teaching and working at the dojang....

And yet, I feel I am not retaining what I am learning. I felt I could have waited for the next test ( a few years) but my Sabumnim wanted me to go for it. I see some of our senior teachers looking at our class of Bodans, and whether they literally say it or you can…
